Arizona List has endorsed Anna Hernandez for the Arizona Senate
Anna Hernandez is a community activist fighting for quality jobs, affordable housing and resources for mental health. Anna is a progressive Democrat running for State Senate in Legislative District 24. She was born and raised in Phoenix, Arizona. While she never wanted to run for office, her family, like many families, has paid the cost of the intentional choices of politicians who put money and ego before people. Because of their choices, AZ ranks 48th in education but 8th in incarceration, quality jobs aren’t in our neighborhoods, housing is unaffordable, and our communities are denied important resources. Anna began advocating for police accountability and reinvestment of the police budget in community resources after her brother was killed by the Phoenix Police Department in 2019. Since then she has learned that state violence is not limited to policing and criminalization but is also maintained by how elected officials advance policies that keep our communities in poverty, attack our autonomy, and reduce our life expectancy. Anna believes that we need to be represented by people that understand the impact of their decisions. She is committed to fighting for fully funded education for children, access to quality jobs, affordable housing for all, resources for mental health and substance use, and freedom from state violence. There are two open House seats in LD24; Arizona List has endorsed Anna Abeytia and Analise Ortiz.
Anna Abeytia is a Cartwright School Board member working to support families with fully funded education. Anna was born and raised in Maryvale, and spent her teenage years between Glendale and Phoenix. She is a proud product of the Cartwright School District, having attended Spitalny Elementary and Atkinson Middle schools. Getting involved with her community was something that came naturally, her grandparents were civil rights activists and instilled in her the importance of being politically engaged and standing up for what is right – and she now serves as the youngest member of the Cartwright Governing School Board. Since graduating from high school in 2014, she has worked on numerous campaigns here in Arizona, and she knew that she needed to do more than help Democrats get elected and pass or ballot initiatives. She loves the work she does for her community on the Cartwright School Board, but I have realized there is more work to be done in order to fully advocate for the improvement of our schools and communities. That is why she is stepping up to run for the House of Representatives.
Analise Ortiz a former journalist and civil rights organizer advocating to protect reproductive rights and invest in public schools. She is a running to represent Maryvale and Glendale in the Arizona House of Representatives Legislative District 24. Ortiz’s parents are both educators who taught their six kids to always give back to the community. Growing up in Arizona, Ortiz recognized that many state leaders were passing laws that hurt Arizona families and was determined to shine light on these injustices. Ortiz graduated from ASU and pursued a career in political reporting before moving on to get involved in politics herself. Ortiz has several years of legislative advocacy and grassroots organizing experience. While working at the ACLU, Ortiz helped push forward criminal justice reform legislation and defeat bills that would restrict abortion care. Ortiz is an auntie to six kids and is committed to building a brighter future for them and all Arizona kids. She has a track record of fighting for working families and is ready to deliver courageous leadership. Learn more about Anna and her campaign issues at her website here.
