Highlighting Helen Hunter!

As Black History Month continues, we’re proud to spotlight one of our honorees, Rev. Dr. Helen Hunter, an advocate for social justice, dedicated pastor, and community leader.

About Helen Hunter For over 30 years, Rev. Dr. Hunter has devoted herself to serving underserved populations, focusing on vital areas such as housing and healthcare. A resident of Mesa, Arizona for 16 years, she has worked diligently on initiatives with organizations like Arizonans Concerned About Smoking and the United States Public Health Service to implement non-smoking policies at HBCUs.

In her pastoral role, she has been instrumental in providing housing solutions for low- and moderate-income individuals. Her advocacy extends to healthcare, where she serves as a board-certified chaplain.

A staunch advocate for community policing, Helen served as the Mesa PD community representative  and contributed to the Mesa Use of Force Committee’s policy review process. Her leadership shone during her tenure as President Emeritus of the East Valley NAACP, working closely with local police chiefs. Helen takes pride in her efforts to transition low-income HUD housing renters to homeownership, provide legal redress for Arizonans, and her persistent candidacies which have helped expand the progressive footprint in her district.

In Her Own Words On the current challenges facing our nation, Helen reflects: “The current state of affairs in the USA is devastating as we witness the staggering rollback of 60 years of constitutional protections… The impact it has on my work is a deepened resolve to continue fighting for Democracy, freedom, and justice for ALL Americans.”

Helen takes pride in her efforts to transition low-income HUD housing renters to homeownership, provide legal redress for Arizonans, and her persistent candidacy in elections despite significant barriers, which has helped expand the progressive footprint in her district.

Historical Inspirations This Black History Month, Helen draws inspiration from figures like Harriet Tubman, Shirley Chisholm, John Lewis, and Barack Obama, alongside her own mother and ancestors, whose bravery and spirit have profoundly shaped her approach to leadership and service.

Looking Ahead Helen is focusing on hosting discussion groups, organizing town hall meetings, providing voter education, and training new candidates across Arizona to ensure robust community engagement and informed participation in governance.
