Overview

Primary elections are held to determine the front-runner for a general election or to reduce the number of candidates running for office. Primary elections usually take place within a political party. The primary election procedure differs from nation to nation and even state to state in the US. The primary election categories in the United States are as follows

Primary elections in Arizona- Due to Arizona’s semi-closed primary laws, voters are typically required to be registered members of the party to participate in the primary. Voters who have not yet affiliated may participate in the primary of their choosing.

Candidates in Arizona primary elections are chosen by plurality voting, which means that even if they do not receive an absolute majority of the total votes cast, the candidate with the most votes wins.

Key Issues

Voting can help reverse or limit the effect of local laws that are put in place to restrict access to reproductive rights and abortion. On April 5th, The Arizona Supreme Court upheld the 1864 law that outlawed abortion almost completely. Arizonans would either have to live with the present 15-week prohibition or return to a territorial statute that existed before Arizona became a state, depending on the outcome of the case.

Importance of Voting

Voting is an essential right and responsibility of American Citizens. Voting plays a very crucial position in the democratic society we live in. Serving as an endeavor that helps keep our nation functioning and stable. The first important component of voting is equality, this is driven by the equal opportunity for the citizen who are eligible to vote, to make a political decision to have their voice heard. The second component is change, which allows voters to decide which leadership they prefer and what kind of direction they want our country to go in. Lastly, it allows for more citizen engagement in our country which includes local and federal politics. Engagement promotes political awareness and education for eligible voters. Primary voting is very important and crucial because it not only helps parties choose the most deserving and competitive candidates but also shapes the policies and strategies that will influence the general election’s result by establishing the voter base necessary for a successful local election.
