Stephen is a Professor of Political Science at Northern Arizona University. His academic work focuses on Latinx-LGBTQ political participation, the impact of voter IDs on minorities, authoritarianism, and the influence of partisan outreach on vote choice. He teaches courses on immigration, Latino politics, political participation, and research methods. Stephen is the inaugural Dr. Richard D Young Faculty Fellow at NAU.

Stephen brings almost eight years of experience as a writer and analyst for NBC News, covering politics, immigration, political campaigns, and life stories of Latinos making their imprint on the American story. He wrote over 200 articles for NBC News since 2012, making him one of the most widely read Latino public voices in academia.

He sits on several boards focused on serving under-represented communities; North Country Health Care in Flagstaff and Violence Intervention Program in Los Angeles, CA. He is also a Senior Analyst for BSPResearch, a firm that uses evidence-based approaches to consult non-profit organizations, government agencies, and election campaigns.

Stephen was born in the historically rich neighborhood of Boyle Heights, CA. He went to a Jesuit High School in Los Angeles where he learned to stand in awe of the weight people must carry every day, rather than to stand in judgement of the way in which they carry it. He received his Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from UC Irvine and his B.A. in Political Science from UCLA.

He has four kids; Andie (2003), Quinn (2005), Evi (2007), and Santi (2009), and has lived in Arizona since 2008. He lives in Flagstaff where he likes to spend time with his partner, Monica, send memes to his kids, practice yoga, bake, care for his plants, read, and follow the LA Dodgers.
