Arizona’s Reproductive Rights Coalition Responds to the U.S. Supreme Court’s Decision on Dobbs v Jackson Women’s Health Organization

Phoenix, Arizona – Today, Arizona’s Reproductive Rights Coalition condemns the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. Arizonans have relied on the federal constitutional right to abortion established by Roe for nearly fifty years. Several state laws passed after Roe recognize that it is legal to provide and receive abortion care in Arizona, but the Court’s decision will leave access in our state on dangerously unstable ground. People living in poverty; disabled people; young people; Black, Indigenous, and Latinx people; and rural and immigrant communities already face disproportionate barriers caused by abortion bans. Today’s decision will create even more devastating disparities.

Our Coalition members will continue to fight for a future where Arizonans have the freedom to decide whether and when to grow our families. We are working to end criminalization, punishment, and harassment for a person’s decisions around family planning, the outcome of their pregnancy, and any medical decision concerning their body. Emergency rooms and hospitals must not become sites of surveillance and policing. Prosecutors have an obligation to protect the rights of their communities, and should not prosecute people for pregnancy outcomes or the providers who support them. Arizonans want and deserve better.

Polls consistently show that Arizonans believe access to abortion should remain legal, and the Coalition urges voters to set their sights on the 2022 elections in August and November. Everyone has the power to demand that elected officials take bold action to protect communities from reproductive coercion by the state. Now is the time for all of us to take a stand for abortion access by supporting abortion funds, destigmatizing abortion care, and taking this fight to the ballot box on Election Day by voting for candidates who champion abortion access.
