Thank you, Tempe

Dear Tempe Community,

As my term on the Tempe City Council comes to a close on June 30, I find myself reflecting with immense gratitude on the journey we have shared. Serving the residents of Tempe has been one of the greatest honors of my life, and I am deeply thankful for the trust you placed in me and the opportunity to represent this extraordinary community.

Throughout my time on Council, I have had the privilege of working alongside dedicated residents, city staff, community organizations, business leaders, educators, and fellow elected officials who all share a commitment to making Tempe stronger, more inclusive, and more vibrant.

None of our accomplishments would have been possible without your engagement, advocacy, and willingness to work together in service of our community. Every achievement reflects the collective efforts of people who care deeply about Tempe and its future.

Together, we have:

  • Expanded community support through outreach initiatives, including water drives, food and toy drives, backpack drives, and school supply drives, helping families and students access essential resources.
  • Advanced digital equity by supporting a new fiber license and right-of-way agreement with GFiber, helping expand access to high-speed internet for residents and businesses.
  • Prioritized student and school safety through advocacy for Sandy Hook Promise initiatives, collaboration with school districts, and support for the Real Time Operations Center to enhance security and emergency response efforts.
  • Championed inclusion and accessibility through Increased Advocacy for Youth with Disabilities Council Subcommittee to ensure every resident has the opportunity to thrive, and families are aware of the many resources right here in our community.
  • Enhanced public safety through the adoption of the Brass Knuckles Ordinance and other community safety efforts.
  • Strengthened animal welfare protections by supporting updates to the City’s Animal Ordinance through the Animal Welfare & Cruelty Council Subcommittee, establishing clearer standards and safeguards for animals. I will continue to work with Maricopa County Animal Care and Control and the City of Tempe to support positive outcomes for animals and residents alike.
  • Collaborated with the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Commission (MYAC) to organize a community event that raised awareness of teen mental health and connected youth with support resources.
  • Partnered with the Mexican Consulate to host a 5K run and health fair at Tempe Town Lake, connecting residents with health resources while encouraging active and healthy living.
  • Championed Thrive in Tempe, a cross-sector partnership among the City of Tempe, Arizona State University, and local school districts that helps families access educational resources and support services while advancing college and career readiness.

These accomplishments are not mine alone, they belong to all of us. They are a testament to what can be achieved when a community comes together with a shared vision and a commitment to service.

While my time on Council is ending, my love for Tempe and dedication to this community remain unwavering. I will continue to be a proud resident, advocate, and supporter of the city we all call home.

Thank you for your support, your partnership, and your belief in our shared work. Serving you has been a privilege that I will always cherish.

With sincere gratitude,
Berdetta Hodge
