Rep. Pamela Power Hannley – LD 9 House

Pamela Powers Hannley was elected to the Arizona House in 2016. A mother of 2, small business owner, nonprofit founder and proud progressive Democrat, Pamela has called Tucson home since 1981.

During her first year in the legislature, Pamela voted against all new tax cuts for big corporations, fought for increased funding for K-12 public education, JTED, community colleges, and the universities, and voted against using taxpayer funds to pay for private and religious school education. She also proposed ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment (ERA), fought for restoration of cash assistance and childcare subsidies for needy families, and voted to increase teacher pay. She proposed bills to offer addiction treatment instead of jail for people who call 911 during an overdose situation; to require healthcare providers and institutions to reveal religious beliefs that would stop them from providing legal drugs or medical procedures; to legalize death with dignity and outlined a process for patients, family members and physicians to follow; and to expand Clean Elections to county supervisor races and unpaid boards, such as school and water boards.

Pamela developed a keen grasp of health care issues during her twenty years working in the public health field. After receiving her Masters in Public Health from UofA, she worked on several important health initiatives, including Five a Day for Better Health and Family Sun Safety. She also served for many years as program director for the Arizona Smokers Helpline, and from 2004-2016 she was the managing editor for the American Journal of Medicine.

Pamela received an A+ rating from the Sierra Club, a 100% rating from Children’s Action Alliance, and recognition from the Pima County Interfaith Council. The Secular Coalition honored Senator Powers Hannley as a Secular Star.

Pamela grew up in Amherst, Ohio and holds a Bachelor’s degree in journalism from The Ohio State University and a Masters in public health from UofA. She and her husband James Hannley founded Arizonans for a New Economy in 2014. Together they have 4 children and 4 grandchildren.
