Tucson Unified School Board

Rebecca Zapien has lived in Arizona for over 25 years. She is a third-generation teacher, parent and community organizer. She came to the U.S. as an English Language Learner and was able to keep her heritage language thanks to the advocacy of her mother and Bilingual Education in school. Currently, she supports undergraduate students who are looking to become certified Early Childhood Teachers within the College of Education at the University of Arizona. She spends time in classrooms working with kids and alongside the undergrads, teaching them theory hands on and to learn by doing. Rebecca currently serves on the boards of Translate Gender (national organization advocating for gender inclusivity) and Tucson Children’s Project. She previously served on the board for the Living Streets Alliance and the YWCA of Southern AZ.
