Who We Are
Arizona List is a grassroots donor network supporting pro-choice Democratic women running for office in Arizona and we want you to join us!
Founded in 2003 by a group of women determined to organize and break the barriers for women candidates, we have grown into an organization we are proud of, already helping to elect 20 Democratic women to state and local offices. These victories include gaining 7 Democratic seats in the Arizona House and Senate, and winning 4 tough city council races against entrenched Republican candidates or in strong Republican districts.
We are modeled after EMILY’s List and are committed to changing the face of power in Arizona by equipping women candidates with the training and resources they need to be serious contenders.
Progressive women’s politics are rooted in Arizona’s history. On November 5, 1912, women’s suffrage was written into the Arizona Constitution, eight years before the 19th amendment was passed in 1920.
Arizona made national history in 2000 when all five of the top elected officials in the state were women.
We believe that women bring distinctive perspective and priorities to leadership – better policy is created on issues that affect all of us including health care, education, environmental protection, economic development and violence protection. Power is in numbers, please join us in building the progressive leaders of tomorrow.
Staff
Pam Grissom, Chairman of the Board
“As one of the founders of Arizona List, I’m very proud of what we’ve accomplished in four years. It’s been a pleasure to help elect some hard-working women to public office. My goal is for Arizona List to become a strong institution that will always be an available resource for women running for public office in Arizona.”
Laura Hogan, Head of the Endorsement Committee
“We need to be involved at both local and state levels of government to be truly effective at what we do. How else will we develop candidates to run for the legislature in the future? Term limits means that every eight years we need a fresh class of faces to come to the forefront. That means candidate development is a clear priority for us.”
Jessica Brandt, Treasurer
“I am very happy to be working with Arizona List as the new treasurer. Growing up in a progressive feminist household has given me an appreciation for what women have accomplished politically and socially over the last few decades, as well as the realization that the job is not finished. I believe that the world, and certainly my community, would be a better place if there were more women in elected office. Arizona List has proven to be effective in this goal by finding, training, and funding qualified candidates and I am excited to be a part of the growth of this organization.”
Jeni Porter, Administrative Assistant
“My favorite part of the job is meeting the candidates because it makes me feel more involved – we’re helping elect real people to solve real problems.” Jeni began working with Arizona List in 2003 as our first intern. She found out about the internship in a Women’s Studies class at the U of A. After her internship she was offered a job as the Administrative Assistant and has been invaluable ever since.
